Etymology

Perhaps from the base *aut, imitative of its call, +‎ -illo. Or, from Vulgar Latin *ōtellus, a diminutive of Ancient Greek ὠτός (ōtós), genitive of οὖς (oûs, “ear”), referring to its ears.
