Semantically, compare Japanese 百舌 (mozu, shrike), where both the actual etymology and the consequent spelling contain an element meaning "hundred". Compare also Chinese 伯勞 / 伯劳 (bóláo, shrike), where the first element can be read in Sino-Vietnamese as bách (aside from the more common ).
