Etymology

From barrow +‎ -man. Prior to the introduction of underground tramways, coal was carried on barrows.

  1. (mining, historical) A putter: one who puts the tubs of coal from the workings to the cranes, flats, or stations, so that they can be conveyed to the surface.
  2. (historical) A street vendor selling fruit and vegetables from a barrow.
