From Proto-Tai *biːᴮ (“older sibling”).[1] Northern Tai dialects have the tone C such as Zhuang beix [peiꟲ²] due to contamination from Proto-Tai *nwoːŋꟲ (“younger sibling”).[2]

In Northern Tai, cognate with Bouyei bix.

In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Thai พี่ (pîi), Northern Thai ᨻᩦ᩵, Lao ພີ່ (phī), Lü ᦗᦲᧈ (pii¹), Shan ပီႈ (pīi), Ahom 𑜆𑜣 (pī).
