besouro

Portuguese

Etymology

From Old Galician-Portuguese abesouro (beetle), of unknown origin. Maybe from Latin avis aurea (golden bird) or from Spanish abejorro, from abeja (bee) + -orro (augmentative suffix). Or, possibly imitative of the wing's sounds. Cognate with Galician abesouro (bumblebee).
