cambacica

Portuguese

Alternative forms

  • macacica

Etymology

Borrowed from Old Tupi makasyka.[1]

Pronunciation

  • (Brazil) IPA(key): /kɐ̃.baˈsi.kɐ/
    • (Southern Brazil) IPA(key): /kɐ̃.baˈsi.ka/

  • Rhymes: -ikɐ
  • Hyphenation: cam‧ba‧ci‧ca

Noun

cambacica f (plural cambacicas)

  1. (Brazil) bananaquit (Coereba flaveola)
    Synonyms: papo-amarelo, caga-sebo, mariquita

Usage notes

The gender of this Portuguese zoonym is always feminine: when the gender of the being itself must be specified, use “cambacica-macho” for male, and “cambacica-fêmea” for female. Here, macho is treated as an undeclinable noun and doesn't necessarily need to agree in gender with the referent, but would change to macha if so.

Adjective

cambacica m or f (plural cambacicas)

  1. (Santa Catarina) skinny
