From Proto-Vietic *cuːʔ, from Proto-Austroasiatic *cuʔ (“grandchild”). Cognate with Muong [Bi] chảu (“son-in-law”), Khmer ចៅ (caw), Bahnar sŏu/sâu, Pacoh achau, Khasi 'siew.
Attested as cháu in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651).
