chicara

chicara f (plural chicaras)

1. Pre-reform spelling (used until 1943 in Brazil and 1911 in Portugal) of xícara.
   • 1880, Maria Amalia Vaz de Carvalho, “Duas faces de uma medalha [Two sides of a coin]”, in Contos e phantasias [Short stories and fantasies]‎^[1], 2nd edition, Lisbon: Parceria Antonio Maria Pereira, published 1905, page 169:

     Levantava-se de manhã muito cedo, bebia á pressa uma chicara de café […]

     He got up very early in the morning, drank a cup of coffee quickly […]

   • 1933, Graciliano Ramos, chapter I, in Cahetés‎^[2], 1st edition, Rio de Janeiro: Schmidt, page 7:

     Fui collocar a chicara na bandeja.

     I went to set the teacup on the tray

This spelling coexisted with xicara, but was more common. ⟨x⟩ and ⟨ch⟩ are homophones in most Portuguese dialects, whence the variation prior to a standardized form.
