Etymology

A modification, due to folk etymology, of cormorant by combining it with Latin vorantem,[1] the accusative masculine or feminine singular of vorāns (devouring; swallowing up), the present active participle of vorō (to devour, eat greedily; to swallow up), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷerh₃- (to devour, eat; to swallow).
