damão
Portuguese
Pronunciation
- (Brazil) IPA(key): /daˈmɐ̃w̃/ [daˈmɐ̃ʊ̯̃]
- (Portugal) IPA(key): /dɐˈmɐ̃w̃/
- Rhymes: -ɐ̃w̃
- Hyphenation: da‧mão
Etymology 1
From French daman, from Arabic دَمَان إِسْرَائِيل (damān ʔisrāʔīl).
Noun
damão m (plural damões)
Usage notes
The gender of this Portuguese zoonym is always masculine: when the gender of the being itself must be specified, use “damão-macho” for male, and “damão-fêmea” for female. Here, fêmea is treated as an undeclinable noun and doesn't necessarily need to agree in gender with the referent, but would change to fêmeo if so.
Derived terms
- damão-do-cabo
- damão‑de‑bocage
Etymology 2
Noun
damão m (plural damões)
- augmentative of damo
