Unknown, probably inherited from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *daRaq (“blood”) (doublet of rah, rāh (“blood”)), from Proto-Austronesian *-Raq (“red”), which refers to red collared doves or red turtle doves (Streptopelia tranquebarica).
