derailleur hanger

English

Noun

derailleur hanger (plural derailleur hangers)

  1. (cycling) A replaceable part that connects the rear derailleur to the bicycle frame; some bicycles, in particular those made of steel, have the hanger directly integrated into the frame.
    • 1999, Vic Armijo, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cycling, Penguin, →ISBN, page 246:
The derailleur hanger is the portion of the frame that the rear derailleur attaches to. It's on the right side of the frame just behind the notch for the rear axle. On some bikes, the derailleur hanger is replaceable so that a bent or broken hanger doesn't mean an expensive repair job—simply bolt on a new one.
