From Old French diametre (French diamètre), from Latin diametrus, from Ancient Greek διάμετρος (diámetros) (γραμμή (grammḗ)) (diametros grammē, “line measuring across”), from διά (diá, across) + μέτρον (métron, measure). By surface analysis, dia- +‎ -meter.
