Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish [script needed] (drahoma), from Greek τράχωμα (tráchoma, “dowry given in money”), from Byzantine Greek τραχύ (trakhú, “trachy, a kind of Byzantine silver coin”, literally “rough, eneven”), neuter of τραχύς (trakhús, “rough, eneven”), referring to the concavity of the coins.
