Pronunciation
- (Brazil) IPA(key): (eu te amo) /ˈew t͡ʃi ˈɐ̃.mu/ [ˈeʊ̯ t͡ʃi ˈɐ̃.mu]
- (Southern Brazil) IPA(key): (eu te amo) /ˈew te ˈɐ.mo/ [ˈeʊ̯ te ˈɐ.mo]
- (Portugal) IPA(key): (eu amo-te) /ˈew ˈɐ.mu.tɨ/
- (Northern Portugal) IPA(key): (eu amo-te) /ˈew ˈa.mu.tɨ/
Phrase
- I love you (affirmation of romantic feeling)
- I love you (affection and caring of family members or friends)
Usage notes
- The pronoun te may be placed before or after the verb amo. The former placement is mostly used by Brazilian speakers, and the latter, elsewhere.
- The pronoun eu is often omitted: te amo, amo-te. But Brazilians, in formal contexts, may not omit it clause-initially (where a proclitic is proscribed) as an enclitic would be odd.
