Etymology 1

16th century, calque of German Gewissen, in part through Middle Low German gewēten. Further from Middle High German gewizzen, from Old High German gewizzanī, a calque of Latin conscientia, itself a calque of Ancient Greek συνείδησις (suneídēsis). Equivalent to ge- +‎ weten (to know).
