Etymology 1
Of Germanic origin, (compare Spanish guadañar (“to mow”)), probably from Old Frankish *waiþanjan (“to pasture, forage”), from Proto-Germanic *waiþō (“hunt, pasture, food”), or derived from guadañar. Cognate with Old High German weidanōn (“to hunt, forage for food”) and Sicilian vadagna. More at gain.
