From Proto-Austroasiatic *khɔːkʔ (“to choke on”). Cognate with Eastern Mnong dhŏk (“to choke”) and Proto-Katuic *hɔɔk (“to choke on food”) (whence Pacoh hoq). Related to Acehnese huëk.
