Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *ʔa-cɔːʔ, from Proto-Austroasiatic *cɔʔ (dog). Cognate with Semai co (dog, servant, slave), Halang chô (dog), Pacoh acho (dog), Khmu sɔʔ and Mang θɔː¹. Compare also Khmer (cɑɑ, Year of the Dog), a borrowing from Vietic.
