Etymology 2
There are two possibilities:
- Hego is a variant of hegal. Unlikely, since the change al>o is not attested anywhere else in the language (the word eusko is an artificial and arbitrary alteration of euskal created by by Sabino Arana).
- Hego is the original form, hegal being a compound with an obscure second element. More likely and phonetically impeccable, and also accounts for hegaz and hegats, though a final element -l is otherwise unattested.
