Etymology
From Middle Dutch hermelijn, a diminutive of hermel, harmel, from Old Dutch *hermilo, itself also a diminutive, of *harmo, from Proto-Germanic *harmô. By surface analysis, hermel + -lijn; hermel (also harmel) survived into early Modern Dutch. Cognate with Middle Low German hermelīn, German Hermelin.
