From Middle Dutch jolen (“to sing loudly, rejoice, exult”), of uncertain origin and affiliation, but apparently related to Middle Low German jolen, jȫlen (“to cheer, exult, jubilate”), Middle High German jōlen ("to sing loudly"; > German johlen). Perhaps related to Dutch joelen (“to cry aloud, bawl”). Compare also Dutch jool (“party, glee, revelry”), Dutch jodelen (“to yodel”), Middle High German golen (“to sing”).
