Etymology

Uncertain, either from a hypothetical kad-tarati, from kad (“what”) +‎ tarati (“to cross over”), or from a formation related to Sanskrit कान्तार (kāntāra, “large forest”), itself possibly related to कानन (kānana, “forest”).
