Etymology
Probably borrowed from Old Turkic [Term?], from [script needed] (*qat, “berry”) + [script needed] (-γan, nominal suffix). Compare Kipchak [script needed] (kataγan, “common chicory; endive”),Yakut [script needed] (kı̈tı̈an, “common juniper”), Turkmen gataňňyr (“a particular plant”), Tatar [script needed] (qatı̈rgan, “hawthorn”) (dialectal), Kyrgyz [script needed] (qatrang, “a particular berry plant”) (dialectal). First attested in c. 1395.[1]
