kedėti

Lithuanian

Etymology

Probably from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kedh₂- (to split, scatter); Smoczynski compares Ancient Greek σκεδάννυμι (skedánnumi, to scatter, disperse) and Albanian çaj (to split, cleave).[1] However, Beekes rejects the cognacy with the Greek, due to the semantic links being tenuous.[2] That said, Beekes appears to claim so based on kedė́ti being cognate with kedi̇̀nti (to tug, pluck), which does not necessarily invalidate Smoczynski's derivation.
