From Ottoman Turkish قویو (koyu), from Proto-Turkic *koyug.[1][2][3]
Cognate with Kazakh қою (qoü), Uzbek quyuq, Uyghur قويۇق (qoyuq), Bashkir ҡуйы (quyı), Khakas хойығ (xoyığ), Tuvan хоюг (xoyug), Yakut хойуу (qoyuu).
