Etymology

From Proto-Tocharian [Term?], from Proto-Indo-European *ḱr̥h₂-(e)s-n-yo-, from *ḱérh₂sō (“top of the head”), bearing a striking resemblance in particular to Ancient Greek κρᾱνίον (krāníon) (whence English cranium). Further cognate with Ancient Greek κάρα (kára, “head”) (see English cheer), Old Norse hjarsi (“crown of the head”) (whence Danish isse (“scalp”)), Old English hærn (“brain”) (whence Scots harn).
