lái + xe, ultimately from Old Chinese 舵 (OC *l'aːlʔ) (ZS) (SV: đà) and 車 (OC *kʰlja) (ZS) (SV: xa) respectively; doublet of tài xế (“driver”), a late borrowing from Cantonese.
