laachje

Saterland Frisian

Etymology

From Old Frisian hlakia, hlakkia, from Proto-West Germanic *hlakkōn, from Proto-Germanic *hlakkōną (to laugh). Cognate with West Frisian laitsje (to laugh), Old English hlacerung (scoffing, mockery, scorn). Alteration of k(k) ~ ch likely due to influence from (Middle) Low German lachen, and/or German lachen (to laugh).
