Etymology

Inherited from Old English þȳ lǣs þe (whereby less that), from þȳ (instrumental case of demonstrative article þæt “that”) + lǣs (less) + þe (“that,” relative particle). The þȳ was dropped and the remaining two words contracted into leste.[1]
