From Middle Dutch luusteren, lūsteren, from Old Dutch *lūstren, from Proto-West Germanic *hlūstrēn, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlew- (“to hear”). Cognate with German Low German lüstern (“to listen”), Old High German lūstarēn (whence obsolete or dialectal German laustern, Luxembourgish lauschteren), Saterland Frisian lusterje (“to listen to”).
