From Vulgar Latin *mattearellum, from Vulgar Latin *ma(t)tea, from Latin mateola, from a Proto-Indo-European root describing similar tools: Old High German medela (“plow”), Old Church Slavonic мотыка (motyka, “mattock”), मत्य (matya, “club, harrow”).
Cognate with Portuguese maça, Spanish maza, Catalan maça, French masse, Italian mazza.
