Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *mɛːŋʔ (mouth), from Proto-Austroasiatic *miəŋʔ (mouth, jaw). Cognate with Kri meengq ("language"), Semai miing (cheek), Khmu [Cuang] miəŋ ("to chew"). Doublet of miếng through a prefixed form, and also mánh.

Attested in the Annan Jishi (安南即事, 13th century) as (MC mjaengX).
