Probably borrowed from Pictish [Term?], itself from Proto-Brythonic *mönɨð (compare Welsh mynydd, Cornish menydh, Breton menez), from Proto-Celtic *moniyos, from Proto-Indo-European *men- (“to tower, stand out”) (compare Latin mōns).
