From Middle Welsh mwc, from Proto-Celtic *muk- (compare Cornish mog, Breton mog (fire), moug (suffocation, asphyxiation), Old Irish múch), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)mewg-. Cognate with English smoke and Old Armenian մուխ (mux).
