niķelis

Latvian
Etymology
From Swedish nickel, an abbreviation of German Kupfernickel (“a mineral containing copper and nickel”), from Kupfer (“copper”) + Nikolaus (“the devil”), due to the deceptive silver colour of the relatively valueless ore. Compare kobalts as related to Kobold (“goblin”).
