niner
English
Etymology
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈnaɪnə(ɹ)/
- Rhymes: -aɪnə(ɹ)
Audio (Southern England): (file)
Noun
niner (plural niners)
- (informal) Something nine inches long, or holding nine gallons, etc. (Can we add an example for this sense?)
- (in the singular) The digit 9 in the NATO phonetic alphabet.
Usage notes
In the NATO phonetic alphabet, the two-syllable pronunciation avoids confusion with five and nein. The spelling, however, remains nine.[2]
