niner

English

Etymology

(1): From nine +‎ -er.[1]

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈnaɪnə(ɹ)/
  • Rhymes: -aɪnə(ɹ)
    • Audio (Southern England):(file)

Noun

niner (plural niners)

  1. (informal) Something nine inches long, or holding nine gallons, etc. (Can we add an example for this sense?)
  2. (in the singular) The digit 9 in the NATO phonetic alphabet.

Usage notes

In the NATO phonetic alphabet, the two-syllable pronunciation avoids confusion with five and nein. The spelling, however, remains nine.[2]
