Inherited from Malay pandai, from Old Javanese paṇḍe, paṇḍay (“skilled worker; smith”), from Prakrit paṁḍia, from Sanskrit पाण्ड्यः (pāṇḍyaḥ, “best of the learned”), पाण्डित्य (pāṇḍitya, “cleverness”) or पण्डित (paṇḍita). Doublet of pandita and pendeta.
