From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *pantay (“flat, level (of ground)”). Compare Tagalog pantay (“flat, level”). Note also resemblance to an areal Southeast Asian word for "sea", represented by Chinese 蓬萊/蓬莱 (pénglái).
