perëndi

Etymology

Disputed. Different interpretations have been proposed:

  1. A possible reflection of the sky and thunder god (from Proto-Indo-European *per-en-, an extension of *per(H)- (to strike), confer Proto-Indo-European *PeruHnos and *Perkʷunos), attached to *di, the sky-god (*Dyḗws);[3][4]
  2. Derived from perëndoj (to set (of the sun)), which might be borrowed from Latin parentare (to bring a sacrifice (to the dead); to satisfy).[5][6][7]
  3. Latin imperantem (ruling); compare Albanian dielli perëndon (the sun sets), perhaps ultimately a calque of Ancient Greek ὁ ήλιος βασιλεύει (ho ḗlios basileúei, the sun sets, literally the sun reigns).[8]
