perereca-de-banheiro

Portuguese

Etymology

Literally, bathroom treefrog. They are commonly found inside these places attracted by their humidity.

Noun

perereca-de-banheiro f (plural pererecas-de-banheiro)

  1. (Brazil) snouted treefrog (Scinax fuscovarius)
    Synonym: raspa-cuia
  2. (Brazil, loosely) any frog in the genus Scinax

Usage notes

The gender of this Portuguese zoonym is always feminine: when the gender of the being itself must be specified, use “perereca-de-banheiro-macho” for male, and “perereca-de-banheiro-fêmea” for female. Here, macho is treated as an undeclinable noun and doesn't necessarily need to agree in gender with the referent, but would change to macha if so.
