Etymology

Cognate of Hawaiian poʻicrest of a breaking wave; lid, to cover with a lid; to cup one's hands”; Tahitian poʻi “lid, cover” and popoʻi “to cup one's hands”; Tuamotuan poki “to cover over, [of waves] to crash”.[1] Maybe semantically related to Fijian tavuki “to capsize [of a boat]” and vuki “to change direction” thus from Proto-Oceanic *poki.[2] (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.) Compare with similar parallels in the same language family e.g. semantic connection of Malay membalikkan “to flip or turn over” and terbalik “upside down”.

  1. to turn over, to hang or place concave objects (like boats) upside down
