From Proto-Hmong-Mien *Kəi (“chicken”), likely borrowed from Chinese 鷄 / 鸡 (jī, “id”). Compare also Proto-Tai *kajᴮ (“id”), whence Lao ໄກ່ (kai, “id”) and Thai ไก่ (gài, “id”).[1]
