rây
Vietnamese
Etymology
From Proto-Vietic *-reː (“sieve, to sift”).
Baxter & Sagart (2014: p. 187) propose that this is non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 釃 (SV: si), specifically from Old Chinese 釃 (OC *Cə.sre), for which they reconstruct *Cə.s- to account for Vietnamese high-register tone and ‹r-›.
Compare also Old Chinese 篩 (OC *sri, “sieve, strainer, sifter”) (ZS) (SV: sư).
