From Vulgar Latin *raglāre, from *ragulāre, from Late Latin ragō (whence French raire, réer, Romanian rage). Compare Venetan rajar, ragiar, Sicilian ragghiari, French railler, Occitan ralhar, Catalan rallar. The form ragliare in Italian may have been influenced by a northern Italian variant or Gallo-Romance language (cf. Old Occitan ralhar); compare the original form ragghiare.
