Etymology
Cognate of Danish søle, Norwegian Nynorsk søyle, German suhlen, English soil, sully, Gothic 𐌱𐌹𐍃𐌰𐌿𐌻𐌾𐌰𐌽 (bisauljan). Doublet of solka.
Verb
söla (present sölar, preterite sölade, supine sölat, imperative söla)
- to be too (annoyingly) slow (especially during movement), to dawdle, to delay
- Sluta söla! Skynda på!
- Stop being so slow! Hurry up!
- (often with ner (“down”), intransitive) to make a sticky mess (often through spilling)
- (with ner (“down”), transitive) to sully with something sticky and messy (often through spilling)
- söla ner tröjan med glass
- spill ice cream on the shirt
- (glassblowing) to do own private glassblowing in a glass factory in the hours when the daily production activity is not going on
