Etymology

Formally from Arabic صَدِيد (ṣadīd, pus, ichor), but the sense from صَدَأ (ṣadaʔ, rust). Compare Algerian Arabic صديد (ṣdīd, rust). Apart from their phonetic similarity, both Arabic words refer to impure substances forming on surfaces. Note also the rhyme with ħadid (iron).
