Etymology

Borrowed from Andalusian Arabic *سَفُنَّارْيَة (*safunnārya), from Arabic إِسْفَنَارِيَّة (ʔisfanāriyya)), from Ancient Greek σταφυλίνη ἀγρία (staphulínē agría, wild carrot).

Cognate to Aragonese zafanoria, Asturian and Spanish zanahoria (and its descendants into other languages), Galician cenoria, Portuguese cenoura, Mirandese cenoura, Basque azenario, Libyan Arabic سفنّاريّة (sfənnāriyya) and Maltese zunnarija.
