Etymology

From Proto-Baltic *skerd-ti, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kerdʰ- (to cut), an extension of *(s)ker- (to cut). Cognate with Latvian šķērst (to dissect), Middle High German scherzen (to cut off, shorten), Proto-Germanic *skurtaz (short), Proto-Slavic *skorda (harrow);[1] see also Lithuanian skrósti (to dissect), Latvian šķirt (to part; to divorce).
