skolgård
Swedish
Etymology
skola (“school”) + gård (“yard”)
Noun
skolgård c
- a schoolyard (open area connected to a school where students can spend recess, possibly with one or more playgrounds)
- a playground (see the usage notes)
Usage notes
When playground is used more generally for the outdoor recreational area at a school (possibly just with some basketball hoops or the like), Swedish prefers skolgård (“schoolyard”) to lekplats (“playground”). Lekplats emphasizes an area with playground equipment or the like.
