skolgård

Swedish

Etymology

skola (school) +‎ gård (yard)

Noun

skolgård c

  1. a schoolyard (open area connected to a school where students can spend recess, possibly with one or more playgrounds)
    1. a playground (see the usage notes)
      Synonyms: lekplats, lekpark
Barnen var ute på skolgården under rasten
The children were out on the playground [the schoolyard] during recess

Usage notes

When playground is used more generally for the outdoor recreational area at a school (possibly just with some basketball hoops or the like), Swedish prefers skolgård (schoolyard) to lekplats (playground). Lekplats emphasizes an area with playground equipment or the like.
